History of the Manchester United Jersey

Known as the Red Devils, Manchester United is known for their trademark diablo red home jersey, white shorts and black socks which became the standard home kit when the club changed names in 1902. Prior to that switch, the club was known as Newton Heath and wore distinctive green and gold jerseys before switching to white jerseys with blue shorts in 1896. Color variations were used in the home jersey until 1934 when the all red Manchester United home jersey was brought back following the clubs lowest ever finish of 20th position in the Second Division.

While the Manchester United home jersey has remained red, the away jersey and kit color scheme change almost every year. This year's Manchester United away jersey features a blue plaid pattern, while last year's included dark navy hoops on a blue jersey. Past seasons have seen the Red Devils wear a variety of combinations including an all grey away kit during the 1995-96 season that was quickly dropped when players complained of having trouble spotting teammates against the crowd. In case of a conflict with the opposing team, Manchester United always has a third kit which contrasts their current away jersey.
