History of Manchester City Jerseys
As one of England's oldest clubs with one of the oldest rivalries in the world of football, Manchester City has quite the history forged into its jerseys. Nicknamed The Blues or sometimes The Sky Blues, City didn't actually start with their light blue home kits until 1894, about 10 years after the club's formation. Since then, the home jersey has stayed a consistent color blue for over a 100 years. In 2009, City made the switch back to Umbro, who manufactured their kits for almost 20 years dating back to the mid 1970s.
The Manchester City away kit has a different history to it. In the 1960s, assistant manager Malcolm Allison insisted on the club wearing red and black striped away jerseys. Legend has it that Allison wanted to replicate the colors of AC Milan to instill confidence in his players. Somehow it worked, as the City team won the 1969 FA Cup Final and 1970 European Winners' Cup in the red and black. That style has reappeared in recent years, like the 03/04, 08/09 and last season's 2011/12 Manchester City away jersey.
