In what was surely the biggest beat down of the World Cup so far, Portugal absolutely destroyed North Korea this morning 7-0. After an impressive performance against the Brazilians in their opening match, the North Koreans were completely outclassed this morning in Cape Town.
Raul Meireles got the party started in the 29th minute after a great through ball form Tiago. North Korea had chances early and still seemed to be in the game as the half time whistle blew with the score at 1-0.
The script was flipped though just a few minutes into the second half as Simao’s 53rd minute opened the flood gates, leading to three Portugal goals over the next seven minutes. The score remained 4-0 until the 89th minute when another Portuguese flurry saw the men in red score three more time over the remaining 11 minutes.
The massive goal margin all but guarantees Portugal’s advancement into the knockout round of the tournament. A win or tie against Brazil would see them advance as tops in the group, while even a loss should put them through, unless Ivory Coast is miraculously able to beat North Korea by a similar margin.
