With the US Women’s National Team defeating Brazil for a spot in the Semis in Germany, crowds turned to the U-17 World Cup Final in Mexico.

Mexico 2011 U17 World Cup ChampsFor the past month, some of the most promising youngsters have showed off their best in stadiums across Mexico. With the championship on the line, the Mexico National Team faced Uruguay at the Estadio Azteca, the spiritual home of Mexican football and one of the true cathedrals of the beautiful game.

The game started off cautiously as most World Cup finals do. Both teams spent the first 20 minutes of the game testing each other with little danger for either side. Mexico finally got their first just after the half-hour mark when a cross was flicked on by Mexican Carlos Fierro for Captain Antonio Briseño to volley in. Uruguay nearly hit back right away, but Uruguayan Elbio Alvarez’s shot hit the post rather than the net. Without their influential Rodrigo Aguirre, Uruguay had trouble keeping its shape and creating many opportunities. With Mexico leading 1-0, every touch had the huge crowd of nearly 100,000 at the Azteca cheering and howling.

The second half had Mexico pressing forward with an impressive attack. A serious of shots from Fierro and Bueno had the Uruguayan keeper Cubero, voted the best keeper of the tournament, looking a bit shaky. Uruguay saw a glimmer of hope in the 61st minute, with Uruguayan Juan San Martin collecting the ball at the corner of the box and ripping a shot. Once again, the shot hit the post, Mexico once again receiving some help from the posts, prompting them to tighten their back line.

Staled at 1-0 with only ten minutes left in regulation time, the traditional ‘Oles’ began to rain down from the crowd. A couple more chances came for Mexico in the 83rd minute with a scramble in front of the goal, but both Fierro and Bueno failed to score. Already into injury time, Giovani Casillas put one in, putting the result beyond doubt as the final whistle blew.
