Rumors are probably the best term to describe the wave of news reports hitting the web on Arsenal’s star striker Robin van Persie. RVP made it clear he would like to leave Emirates Stadium at the season’s end as he opted not to renew his contract set to expire.
After putting up 37 goals in the Premier League season, van Persie is on the top of several big clubs’ lists for a powerful, effective scoring forward, like EPL champs Man. City, and crosstown rivals Manchester United.
The source for all the scuttlebutt is a single, solitary agent who claims that Juventus already possesses the signed contract, locked away in a drawer. Whether that’s metaphorical or quite literal, Gunners boss Arsene Wegner has quelled rumors by saying that he can’t see such a world class player going to an inferior league.
Juventus secured the first scudetto (Serie A title) with an undefeated record. Now, the Turin side will be losing Alessandro del Piero, and securing van Persie is a logical replacement for the club who will hope for a strong showing in the coming Champions League.
The only hiccup for this supposed transaction may be the sticker price of recruiting RVP. As a top player in the world’s most prestigious league, Juventus will have to shell out big bucks for last year’s Premier League Golden Boot recipient. If they are unwilling to pay top dollar, the Gunners office may reject a deal.
For Juventus, consideration must also be made as to how quickly van Persie can shift into his top form for the bianconeri. After a long and successful career at Emirates Stadium, RVP may take some time to adjust to a new league, new team and new home.
