United Defeats Man-City, EPL Wrapup

MANCHESTER, England — Manchester United managed to come away with a 3-2 win Sunday, despite being down a man against cross-town rival Manchester City. By eliminating the defending FA Cup champions, Man-U also got its revenge for a 6-1 loss against City in last years FA Cup semifinals.

Wayne Rooney headed two goals and Danny Welbeck scored all in the first half. Being up 3-0, United failed to score again as City rallied back with a two late goals from Aleksandar Kolarov and Sergio Aguero.

While Manchester United coach Roberto Mancini seeks to deepen his squad currently plagued by injuries, his players learned that Paul Scholes would be returning to the Red Devils from retirement.  At 37 years old, Scholes is one of the oldest active players in the Premier League.

Advancing through to the fourth round of the FA Cup, United is joined by Chelsea, Sunderland and Sheffield.  Arsenal also advances, having held off Leeds in a 1-0 win, marked the return of its record goalscorer with Thierry Henry’s late goal in the 78th minute. Arsenal will play Aston Villa in the fourth round January 28th.

Henry will be available for six weeks, which will include matches against Man-United, AC Milan in the Champions League, and possibly Premier League match against rivals Tottenham on February 26th.

Everton and Fullham will face off in the fourth round featuring the meeting of US all-stars Clint Dempsey and Landon Donovan also on January 28th.
