Puma Signs French Star Gael Clichy

Gaining ground on the industry powerhouses of adidas and Nike, Puma has announced a new contract with French star defender Gaël Clichy. The Manchester City left back debuted the latest Puma evoSPEED 1FG cleats last week in a Champion’s League match vs Borussia Dortmund. The signing of Clichy adds yet another name to the growing list of stars now partnered with Puma, including teammates Sergio Aguero & Yaya Toure, as well as Falcao, Mario Gomez, Oliver Giroud and many others.

Clichy has a successful career for being only 27, first hoisting the EPL title with undefeated Arsenal in 2004 at only 18 years old; the youngest title winner in Premier League history. He later would contribute to the Gunners’ win of the FA Cup over Manchester United in a riveting 5-4 penalty shoot out. Clichy was long the understudy of Ashley Cole at Arsenal, but when Cole was injured in 2005 and later left for Chelsea in 2006, the French defender saw more time in the starting lineup.

Though holder of the starting left back position, Clichy battled several foot injuries himself, until his 2007/08 season. That season, he appeared in a career high and team best 49 matches including all 38 league matches. He notched six assists on the season, a career high and was named to the team of the year with teammates Sagna, Adebayor & Fabregas. He was also voted 2nd in the fans poll for Player of the Season.

Since his move to Manchester City in 2011, Clichy has contributed to their 2011/12 League Title, including his play in the final match of the season, a shocking 3-2 comeback against Queen’s Park Rangers to allow City the league title, Clichy’s second title of his career.

Said Clichy on the switch to Puma, I am glad to start this new partnership with PUMA. It is an exciting brand and my new boots are very comfortable, so I am confident to perform well wearing them during the upcoming season. With Yaya Touré and Sergio Aguero, two of my Manchester City team mates recently signing with PUMA as well, and I am thrilled to be part of the PUMA family.

You can catch him in the latest edition of Puma’s premium speed silo against West Brom on Saturday, October 20th at 10AM Eastern.
