Scholesy’s testimonial took place today and what better way to say goodbye to his legendary legacy at Manchester United than with one of his trademark goals. He gave Man United all the scoring it needed in the 8th minute when he smashed a 25-yard effort from the left side past former US international keeper Brad Friedel.
Man United went on to beat the reborn New York Cosmos, made up of mostly retired stars and players from their U23 team, 6-0 at a sold out Old Trafford. While the focus of the game was on the end of Scholes’ soccer career, the game also marked a new beginning for the reborn New York Cosmos.
After months of hyping the brand and pushing the merchandise, the Cosmos were finally able to produce a team. While the scoreline was not newsworthy, their ability to play in front of the 75,000 spectators present was. And getting to play against one of the best teams in world with a player like Scholes, who is already being regarded as a legend, doesn’t seem like too bad a deal either.
