City and United the Stars in Community Shield 2011

Summer is coming to an end which means English football is back and there is no better way to celebrate the return of one of the best leagues in the world than with the Community Shield starring Manchester’s giants, Man United and Man City. A match between the winner of the Premier League and the winner of the FA Cup from the previous year, Manchester United will be defending the shield, having beat Chelsea 3-1 in last season’s match.

English Community Shield A glimpse into the upcoming season, the Community Shield offers these two rivals the chance to set the mark, establishing them as the team to beat.

Manchester United hasn’t found victory at Wembley recently, having suffered two crushing defeats at the end of last season. First to Manchester City, 1-0 in the FA Cup semi-final, followed closely by a 3-1 defeat to FC Barcelona in the Champions League Final. Since then, Man United have developed their team through favorable transfers and won five consecutive preseason matches, keeping them as favorites to collect the a 19th Community Shield.

Manchester City FC on the other hand have had a mixed preseason. First Mario Balotelli suffered a severe public embarrassment after he failed an attempted back heel against LA Galaxy. This was quickly followed by the development of everyone’s favorite drama, Carlos Tevez trying to leave Eastlands. They have found some success though, purchasing defenders Gael Clichy and Stefan Savic, along with the £40 Million striker Sergio Aguero.

With new transfers hoping to find their starting spot and both teams looking to start off the season with some fresh silverware, this game is sure to impress.
