First Avatar, Now Premier League

Wembley Stadium
With Soccer lagging behind football, baseball, golf, hockey, beach volleyball and practically every other sport in viewing popularity in the US, a revamping of how the game is experienced at home might be the solution.  The Premier League may be on to something here.  They plan to bring in “immersion technology” that will create a viewing experience that will surpass all other sports.

Plans to create a game viewing experience that includes 3D, real stadium audio, interactive viewing and other exciting technologies is planned to bring the game day excitement and the the best seats in the stadium to watchers abroad.

The Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore believes that this “immersion technology” is only a few years off for the Premier League and is already working with Sony and Electronic Arts to make it a reality sooner rather than later.

“If you turn your head one way you’re looking at the left-hand goal and the other way you’re looking at the right-hand goal,” says Scudamore about the interactive component of the technology.

The controversial plans for the 39th game – to be played abroad – have been scrapped.  The focus and funds are going towards the new technology so that instead of flying all over the world for the one game, hopefully all games will soon be able to be experienced in full in your living room.

Considering changes have been slow, technologically speaking, for the game of soccer, these innovations could pave the way to popularity in the US.  That is, as long as the Premier League sticks with their plans and completes it before the NFL does.

My question is, before all this virtual reality of soccer games, can we please get instant replay and goal-line technology.  Just saying.
