With a 4-0 victory over West Brom, Manchester City reassured fans and the world that they will not go down without a fight for the Premier League title. Doing everything they can to keep performance high through the final weeks of the the Premier League, they also took advantage of a shock victory 1-0 when Wigan hosted Manchester United today.
Now, the fate of Man City is back in their own hands. Down only five points in the table, City will have the opportunity to claim the title if they continue their streak and beat Manchester United in their final two match-ups against the Red Devils.
Sergio Aguero began the attack, scoring rather quickly, for the first time at six minutes. Sparking a streak of brilliance, Aguero scored again (54′) only to have Carlos Tevez (61′) and David Silva score (64′) only minutes later. The scoring streak comes after a scoreless loss to Arsenal on Saturday that left City devastated as they saw their title hopes begin to slip.
Arsenal proved themselves again today with a 3-0 victory over Wolverhampton that is threatening relegation. Robin Van Persie put another goal (pen 9′) away towards his Premier League leading 27 total this season. Theo Walcott (11′) and Israeli midfielder Yossi Benayoun (69′) both scored to secure the victory for the Gunners. That keeps them comfortably in the 3rd position (64 points) ahead of Tottenham and Newcastle, both with 59 points apiece.
A lone goal by Shaun Maloney (50′) was all it took to seal the deal for Wigan, playing host to the Red Devils. That leaves Manchester United in a troubling position with only a month of fixtures remaining. United will host Aston Villa this weekend and Everton next weekend before the back-to-back fixtures against Man City.
