Champions League Preview – Nov. 20th

As Manchester United was the first team to secure their place in the next round of the Champions League, nearly every other group is up for grabs with only two matches left. Reigning Chelsea could see a make or break moment tomorrow when they take on Juventus. Chelsea has failed to rally any momentum, but holds the edge at the top of the group (Chelsea 7 pts, Shakhtar Donetsk 7 pts, Juventus 6 pts, FC Nordsjaelland 1 pt).

Chelsea coach Roberto Di Matteo is rumored to be benching Fernando Torres and start Daniel Sturridge in the central striker role. Chelsea seems to have slipped into the same slump they found themselves in last year, which included a severe goal drought from Fernando Torres. After an impressive start to the season, winning seven of eight League games, the Blues lost a big match to Manchester United. Since then, they have tied or lost their last 4 league games, with their only win coming from a 90′ + 4′ stoppage time goal from Victor Moses two weeks ago vs. Shakhtar Donetsk.

Bastian Schweinsteiger celebrates after his goal in the 5th minute against LilleGroup F will feature Valencia (9 pts) v. Bayern Munich (9pts) in a battle for the top of the group. Bayern comes off a 6-1 massacre over Lille on November 7th to put them in contention for first place. BATE Borisov (6 pts) is looking to stay alive when they face Lille. Valencia is coming off a 4-2 win, who will host Bayern Munich. The winning team books their spot in the next round while a draw could open the group up with a Borisov victory.

FC Barcelona will travel to Moscow and look to improve on their last outting, suffering a 2-1 defeat to Celtic. A win would ensure Barcelona’s appearance in the next round. Celtic will take on Benfica, who must win in order to avoid elimination. Manchester United sits atop group H, while CFR Cluj-Napoca (4 pts) Galatasaray (4 pts) and Braga (3 pts) all look to edge ahead of the bottom half and secure a second bid.
