‘Keeper Snatches Late Equalizer for Columbus

There’s always an element of surprise when a goalie scores in open play. It’s unexpected and almost always due to pure luck, granted they were in the right place at the right time.

Lucky or not, Columbus Crew keeper William Hesmer has entered the books as the second goalie in MLS history to score a goal. As the clock ran out, Columbus was down by one with only a couple of minutes left. As a last attempt, they surrendered their last line of defense and risked it all, leaving Hesmer at the top of the six to score.

As Hesmer continues his career as one of the few, it is unlikely he will ever score again. But he’ll be able to sleep at night, knowing that for a split second he had the composure and belief to take a chance and prove that goalies too can be goal scoring heroes.
