Lady Aztecs Win Mountain West, Rank 4 in NCAA Poll

SDSU Women's Soccer 2012

After an impressive 19-1-1 season, the San Diego State Women’s Soccer Team is giving fans their best season in school history. Capping off their season with the Mountain West Conference Title (defeating New Mexico 2-0), the Aztecs headed into the NCAA Tournament as a 2-seed ranked 4th overall. The 19-win season tied the school record, and the fun didn’t stop there.

This past Saturday, the lady Aztecs hosted CSU Northridge to kick off the NCAA Tournament on the SDSU Sports Deck under the lights. The Aztecs dominated the field on their home court, despite losing a 8-16 shot advantage, the Aztecs maintained a 4-2 shots on goal advantage.  Creating enough chances, the Aztecs asserted the lead early in the 10th minute on a 15 yard chip from Hanna Keane, her sixth goal on the season.

In the 25th minute, Megan Jurado scored on an assist from fellow-forward Keane with a shot to the top right corner of the frame from 22 yards. The Aztecs extended their lead again late in the second half, with senior Sarah Halverson scoring unassisted in the 80th minute. A low sweeping kick from 10  yards to the left corner got by Matadors keeper Cynthia Jacobo who ranked third in the nation on save percentage (.913) and fourth in goals-against average (0.46).

The 3-0 win advances the Aztecs to 20-1-1, besting the previous school record of 19 wins. It was also Aztec keeper Rachel Boaz’s 11th clean sheet of the season, as the Aztecs grow their undefeated streak at home to 13-0-0 on the season.

NCAA Women's College Cup Venue | Torero Stadium, San Diego, Calif.Moving onto the round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament, SDSU hosts California, Berkeley this Friday, 11/16 at 7:00PM. Cal comes off a 1-0 victory in the first round against Pepperdine. Without looking too far ahead, we like the chances for the Aztecs. If no. 1 seed Stanford holds through to the quarterfinals, the lady Aztecs will be seeking revenge after their 1-0 loss in mid-September. On top of that, the semifinals and the championship game will all be held in sunny San Diego, in the Aztecs back yard over at University of San Diego.

No matter the outcome of the next couple weeks, we’d like to congratulate the SDSU Women’s Soccer Team on a historic season. We’ll be rooting them on this weekend and all the way through the tournament. Mark your calendars, as the Semifinals & Championship game take place Friday & Sunday, Nov. 30th – December 2nd respectively at USD Torero Stadium. Ticket packs are available for both semifinals and the championship for 40 dollars.
