Beckham Predicts Premier League Winner

Beckham ponders who will top the EPL come May.

For those of you wondering which team is going to win this year’s English Premier League title, David Beckham has a clue for you: Bet on red.  The LA Galaxy star has offered his prediction regarding the current Premier League race, declaring that Manchester United will win the title.  His prediction is unsurprising, given that Manchester United is his former team, and a team which he is still openly a fan of.  There’s also the raw numbers: The title has gone to Manchester United in 12 of the Premier League’s 19 seasons, so if you’re playing the percentages, United is the safe bet.

But there’s a new kid on the block this year, making a realistic title challenge for the first time.  This season, there is a possibility that the title could go to Manchester, but not to Old Trafford.  Roberto Mancini and Manchester City are still unbeaten in the league after 12 games, and show no signs of slowing down any time soon.  Even so, everyone is wondering if they can keep up their momentum for the duration of the long season.  Those questions won’t be fully answered until May, but Beckham thinks United will use their experience to come out on top.

Will the season end in disappointment for Roberto Mancini?

Speaking this week during the Galaxy’s tour of Asia, Beckham cited United’s experience and their record of recent success as reasons they will overtake City.  Those reasons are certainly hard to argue with, given the culture of success that has been bred at Old Trafford over the past two decades.  Add to that United’s habit of getting stronger as the season goes on, and Beckham’s prediction starts looking like pretty good sense.

There’s no denying the pedigree and quality of United’s players.  They have shown in the past that they have what it takes to win the EPL title, and you can be sure Wayne Rooney, Chicharito, and Nemanja Vidic won’t let it slip from their grasp without a fight.  But however unlikely it seems that City will finish ahead of United, David Silva, Sergio Aguero, and company will be reminding themselves of one thing: Manchester United was not always top dog.  There was a time when they too were on the outside looking in, wondering if it was possible to break Liverpool‘s English dominance.  Beckham should remember this well, as he was a teenager with United at the time when they finally broke through and unseated the mighty Liverpool.

Could this be the year City finally edges out United and begins the demise of the United empire, or will Sir Alex Ferguson be able to rally his troops and overcome his latest challenger?  One way or another, it’s going to be a close finish, and an exciting ride.
