History of the Arsenal Jersey

Today known for their red Arsenal home jerseys, white shorts and white socks, the Gunners originally wore a redcurrant jersey with white shorts and blue socks. The introduction of today's bright red jersey was in 1933 when Herbert Chapman added white sleeves and updated the red color of the jersey to make his players more distinctive on the field. This Arsenal jersey look has remained constant except for the 1966-67 and 2005-06 seasons. In 1966-67, an all red home jersey was introduced, but the white sleeves were quickly added back after a poor reception from fans. In 2005-06, the last season played at the stadium in Highbury,  the Gunners wore a redcurrant home jersey similar to the 1913 strip worn during the first season played in that stadium.

Taking advantage of the lucrative replica soccer jersey market, Nike has regularly changed the Arsenal away jersey throughout the their time with the club. Most of the Arsenal away kits include yellow or navy in some manner, but they often use two-tone designs or variations of the colors to make each years look original.

Since 1994, the Arsenal jerseys and fan gear line have been produced by Nike. Prior to that, adidas was their kit sponsor from 1986-1994 and Umbro from the 1970s-1986. Like most of the other major European soccer clubs, the Arsenal jersey has been the home to several big name sponsors since the 1980's. Sponsors logos to grace the front chest of the Arsenal jersey have included JVC, SEGA, O2 and Emirates.
